About Us

Abhinaya was formed in 1993 and incorporated in 1998, with an aim to promote Classical Dances of India, which have the unique ability to create spiritual enlightenment in both the dancer and observer. To preserve, propagate and establish this art form on an international stage two to three events are presented each year with performances by regional, national and international talent.
Diverse topics have been portrayed such as “The Life and Resurrection of Jesus Christ”, “Iphigenia in Taurus,” a play by Goethe (performed to mixed German and Indian music by the troupe from Berlin,) Bharata Natyam to Bach, Kathak to Jazz, ancient Tamil literature in Silapadhikaaram and mythological stories such as Mohini Bhasmasura, integrating Eastern and Western thought.
Educational activities focus on lecture demonstrations and workshops by renowned teachers such as Adyar Lakshman and Bragha Bessell.
The traditions of Indian dance are perplexingly complex and varied due to the multiplicity of races and languages. Complex religious beliefs and intricate social structure have contributed to a colorful panorama of dance and dance-drama traditions.
Abhinaya is proud to have presented all the different styles of Classical Indian Dance- Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, Mohini Attam, Kathak, Andhra Natyam, Kathakali, Manipuri, Oddissi, Chau and Yakshagana. We also presented Simhanandini or Sand painting of a lion (in the Kuchipudi style) and also had the privilege of a performance by blind students from Karnataka, India.
